I started this post with a conceit that the story of the mafia in the U.S. was like the American Dream, in reverse. But, after linking it to many disparate sources and strands, I see that La Cosa Nostra is actually on the forefront of changes that capital is making, and the country as result. We're all moving towards the model of gangster capitalism, to some extent. We're all atomized, little franchises, branding ourselves, trying to break out of the role of being a "shortie" to ultimately land as the CEO kingpin. It's like the American Dream in slow motion, or fast forward.

The reference to Horace Miner never worked out totally, did it? I was going to make a stronger connection, but got absorbed by the story of the mob. And, a good story it is, isn't it? I miss the Sopranos.

Reading the title, I thought this post was going to be about Miner's Body Ritual among the Nacirema, which is interesting but unrelated.
